There is critical lack of understanding of obsessive compulsive disorder. There is also a specific therapy considered the gold-standard to treat it: Exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy. In the OCD field we also use other treatments such as ACT, Mindfulness, and medication. Because ERP is so specific, few clinicians are trained to use it.
While it is positive that many people in the state of Washington have health insurance, not every clinician contracts with insurance payers. Therefore, many therapists leave billing and reimbursement up to the client. At Cornerstone, we understand health insurance is expensive enough, so paying out of pocket for counseling can be frustrating.
This creates a double-whammy for clients suffering with OCD: Wait for months to see an insurance contracted therapist trained to use ERP; or pay large fees to see a clinician out of network (you’ll probably still have a wait to get on their schedule.) This situation is horrible and is exactly why we started our group practice. We train clinicians to use ERP for OCD. Our insurance paneled therapists are typically booked solid. But our associate therapists usually have a spot or two open, and our interns can get a new client on their schedule within a week. Interns in our program are professional, excited, and trained in ERP! They are also under my direct supervision.
