Evidence-Based Treatments

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Here at Cornerstone we believe that evidence based treatments are essential for treating our clients. CBT is a psycho-social intervention where clients thoughts are challenged by changing their cognitive distortions and behaviors. These methods improves the individuals emotional regulation to develop healthy coping skills.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

The Exposure in ERP refers to exposing yourself to the thoughts, images, objects and situations that make you anxious and/or start your obsessions. While the Response Prevention part of ERP, refers to making a choice not to do a compulsive behavior once the anxiety or obsessions have been “triggered.” All of this is done under the guidance of a therapist at the beginning — though you will eventually learn to do your own ERP exercises to help manage your symptoms.

That said, this strategy of purposefully exposing yourself to things that make you anxious may not sound quite right to you. If you have OCD, you have probably tried to confront your obsessions and anxiety many times only to see your anxiety skyrocket. With ERP, the difference is that when you make the choice to confront your anxiety and obsessions you must also make a commitment to not give in and engage in the compulsive behavior. When you don’t do the compulsive behaviors, over time you will actually feel a drop in your anxiety level. This natural drop in anxiety that happens when you stay “exposed” and “prevent” the compulsive “response” is called habituation.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) teaches mindfulness skills to help individuals live and behave in ways consistent with personal values while developing psychological flexibility. ACT therapists help individuals recognize ways in which their attempts to suppress, manage, and control emotional experiences create challenges. By recognizing and addressing these challenges, individuals can become better able to make room for values-based actions that support well-being.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness-based interventions: therapeutic approaches grounded in mindfulness, promote the practice as an important part of good physical and mental health. At present, there is no universally accepted definition for “mindfulness.” The term has proven difficult to define due to differing beliefs of what exactly mindfulness is, differing opinions on how to achieve mindfulness, varied views about the purpose of mindfulness, and the challenge of describing the concept using medical and psychological terminology.
Cornerstone OCD uses mindfulness concepts to help clients focus on their chosen thoughts without judging the intrusive thoughts that inevitably come on.

Medication

Experts in the field believe that medication can be a very important part of recovery and treatment of OCD and anxiety disorders. Every client must decide for themselves what they believe about medications and every option is valid. Clients should have an open mind, listen to the experts, and be true to their values. Cornerstone OCD & Anxiety is happy to work with clients' prescribers, especially if they are not familiar with the client's particular diagnosis.
